Flux-Cored-Arc Welding (FCAW)This process is a variation of GMAW. Electrodes comprise a metal drillpressmillingtable sheath surrounding a core of fluxing and alloying coin pounds. Sell-shielded (FCAW-SS), it uses gas generated by bleak drillpressmillingtable down of a powder-flux core inside the wire to shield the weld. Gas shielded (FCAW-SS), external gas supplies shielding.The compounds in the electrode perform essentially the same functions as the coating of a covered electrode used in SMAW: to form a floating slag coating on the weld pool to protect the weld as it solidifies; deliver deoxidizer and scavengers to help purify the weld: deliver are stabilizers to minimize spatter; add alloying elements to the weld, for optimum mechanical properties; and provide shielding gas.

In Europe these tools are known as Tirfor hand winches. In the US they are branded Griphoists. They are also sometimes sold as scaffold hoists. This diversity indicates their astounding versatility for moving heavy things by hand. They do the work of motorized winches--haul logs, or move stuck tractors, raise towers, and so on--but with the deftness of a human hand. Because there is no ratchet or coil, a Griphoist permits very small adjustments, unlike either come-alongs or winches. The patented double-grip mechanism of the Griphoist/Tirfor is drillpressmillingtable considered so reliable that some versions of the unit are rated by the UL to be suitable for hoisting humans--for instance in hoisting window-washers'' scaffolding.
