Cow mini drill press comfortcow comfort was the goal when terry timmons (pictured below) built a new free stall barn on his dairy farm near loudonville, ohio. timmons and his father milk 200 head of registered holsteins. larger stalls with more "lunge space" in the front help their cows get up and down easier now, says press timmons. their old barn, built in the 1970s, had small stalls that were closed in the front. the new stalls were made locally by stein-way drill press equipment in apple creek, ohio. the bedding is sand.the barn was built in august 2001 for $500 a stall, including electricity and water. timmons says the investment has already paid off in better cow health.

the typical avalon autoette is a one-cylinder, 12-horsepower, gas-fueled cart that does about 12 miles per hour. by tweaking the engine you can milk a zippy 18 mph from it. the town''s speed limit is only 20, so you don''t need much more zip than that. an autoette gets about 50 mpg from press its six-gallon gas tank (unleaded regular, $2.50 a gallon out here), although all this is a bit hard to confirm since carts don''t have speedometers or odometers. most are made by yamaha, and most are white.john regalado runs the town''s yamaha dealership. because the city limits the number of carts, regalado doesn''t sell many new ones; service is where the money is. his hand drill press "showroom" is a two-stall repair garage with a couple of newish models parked out front. compactly built, with california beach-boy press looks, regalado''s also a city councilman and the mayor pro tem. he kindly wipes the cart grease from his palms before shaking hands. "kids here look forward to getting golf carts like mainland kids wait to buy cars," he says. "they go cruising after school and scoot out to buena vista point to party at night. you know, teen things."

there is no more versatile machine in the mobile equipment marketplace than the skid-steer loader. and with typical yearly sales in excess of 60,000 units, it''s clear that these machines, seen by many as the swiss army knife of construction machines, have penetrated a wide range of applications.but not all of them, in part because of the very nature of the beast.a skid-steer loader, as the name indicates, maneuvers by "skidding"--slowing or stopping the wheels on one side of the machine, while keeping the other side rolling. this system, drill and press highly valued because of its simplicity and effectiveness, particularly in tight spaces, does have drawbacks in some applications. when operated in grassy areas, skidding the tires can scuff up the turf, a real nono in venues such as parks or golf courses. even where ground disturbance is not an issue, tire wear, or even wearing of the surface on which the machine operates, can sometimes cause problems.
