In the thicket of the Carolina Lowlands, the whirring buzz and grind of a lone chip mill disturbs the summer symphony of rustling branches, crickets and the guttural call of wild turkeys. As the highly-automated leviathan dremel roars with efficiency, stripping bark and grinding trees into usable flakes for the mini drill press paper and pulp industries, hunters and environmentalists do a little roaring of their own. concerned the voracious chippers will devastate southern forests, their interest groups are calling for heightened regulations and a moratorium on new mills until their impacts have been studied. this article describes this new compressor technology and its first use in an ari-certified chiller design.the bearingstraditional centrifugal compressors use roller bearings and hydrodynamic bearings, both of which consume power and require oil and a lubrication system. recently, ceramic roller bearings, which avoid issues related to oil and reduce power consumption, were introduced to the hvac industry. the lubrication of these bearings is provided by the refrigerant itself. press (1)magnetic-bearing technology is significantly different. a digitally dremel controlled magnetic-bearing drill press system, consisting of both press permanent magnets and electromagnets, replaces conventional lubricated bearings. dremel the frictionless compressor shaft hand drill press and press is the compressor''s only moving component. it rotates on a levitated magnetic cushion (figure 1). magnetic bearings--two radial and one axial--hold dremel the shaft in position (figure 2). when we ran out of thoughts we turned the ratchet from loosen to tighten and bolted the car together. with a mig welder borrowed from phoenix we tried to make the two halves stick. after struggling for hours, experimenting with voltage and wire speed, we finally showed weldon, a third-generation ironworker, our progress. after several moments of drill silence, staring press at our atrocious splatter of weld, he said, "well, i hope you''re at least having fun." dealing with strangers first became a problem on a particular wednesday lunch at the phoenix iron works, a month before our departure. despite dremel people''s interest, i found myself getting grouchy. an enthusiastic stranger who walked in off the streets managed to ask the same exact questions i had already answered twice that day. "wow," he said staring at the table, "where did you get the idea?" a button drill pressed inside my head and i launched into spiel #1. when i reached the end of my recording, i beeped and he asked, as if on cue, "what are you going to do when it rains?" without hesitation, press i returned, "get wet," and prepared for the next assault. before he had even finished asking: "how are you going to get across the oceans?" i was screaming dementedly, "take a boat! take a boat!" ©2003 www.drill-press.net All rights reserved. |
