GPS at Ground ZeroGPS was instrumental in documenting the location of items recovered at Ground Zero. FDNY, which had been charged with the task, realized soon after the Sept. 11 attack that recovery workers were having trouble recording evidence locations.Firefighters had to sight landmarks to gauge where they were craftsmandrillpressparts within the 16-acre site, which was broken into 75- by 75-foot blocks for mapping. They then took notes on paper indicating what was found - whether metal fragments or human remains - and approximately where before the item was removed to a landfill, warehouse or the medical examiner''s office. The information later was entered into a computer database by hand. With mapping and routing software installed in each vehicle, fire captains who call out directions can instantaneously receive incident addresses and routing information from the computer-aided dispatch. The map automatically displays the quickest route and re-centers itself when the route goes off the computer screen. As the vehicles near the incident, captains can scan the map on the screen to find the locations of the nearest fire hydrants, as well as any potentially hazardous materials in the area. The 416D has a digging depth of 14 ft. 5 in. with the standard stick and 18 ft. 1 in. with an extendable stick. The 420D has a backhoe digging depth of 14 ft. 5 in. when equipped with the standard stick while the 430D has a digging depth of 15 ft. 3 in. with a standard stick. Extendible sticks push the 420D''s craftsmandrillpressparts dig depth to 18 ft. 1 in. and 19 ft. 11 in. for the 430D. All three machines now feature 205[degrees] rotation of the backhoe bucket linkage, 40[degrees] more than the C-Series machines. "This new design feature makes it easier to dig vertical walls and to clamp material for truck loading," said Hershberger. In addition, the backhoe craftsmandrillpressparts buckets now feature single pin position and all former models'' buckets and Cat work tools can be used on the D-Series. The bucket link now has an integrated lifting eye. ©2003 www.drill-press.net All rights reserved. |
